Team Overview

The Tampa Prep Boys' Soccer Team has established itself as one of premier high school soccer programs in the State of Florida. The Terrapins have won an impressive five State Championships since 2005 and were recently by ranked (by ESPN Rise) 12th in the country (during the 2009-10 season). The members of the coaching staff, consisting of two former professionals and two former youth national team members, have helped produce multiple players for Division I collegiate competition.  The Terrapin Boys' Soccer Program is committed to excellence and it strives not only to develop athletes and win on the field, but also to prepare student-athletes for life after Tampa Prep.

Coach Info

Head Coach: Doug Smith
Coaching Background:
Coach Smith has an extensive soccer background. In college, Smith played on teams that were consistently ranked in the top twenty (of Division I teams in the country). In 1995, Smith captained the University of Maryland and helped lead the (Maryland) Terrapins to the NCAA "sweet-sixteen." After college, Smith played four seasons of professional soccer in the National Professional Soccer League (Miami, FL) and the Continental Indoor Soccer League (Washington, D.C.). Smith served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Maryland in 2003, a season during which the Maryland Terrapins were a "final four" participant. Since Smith has been with the soccer program at Tampa Prep, the team has won five state championships. Smith has been named the Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2013, the Tampa Tribune's Coach of the Year in 2010, 2012, and 2013, and the Tampa Bay Times’ Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013. In 2013, Smith was also named the NSCAA’s (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Florida Coach of the Year. With multiple connections at next level, Coach Smith has also helped develop multiple players for collegiate competition. One of Smith's primary goals for Tampa Prep soccer is not only to win on the field, but also to help develop student-athletes for collegiate soccer and for life beyond Tampa Prep.

Assistant Coach: Ian Edwards
Coaching Background: Coach Edwards is a professionally certified coach, who holds a U.S. Soccer National "D" License. He has over eight years of experience coaching youth soccer players, and he continues to work with local players of all ages. Coach Edwards, moreover, has helped develop multiple youth players for U.S. Soccer's Development Academy, and he has unquestionably helped many Tampa Prep soccer players prepare for collegiate competition. With his wealth of experience, Coach Ian Edwards has contributed significantly to the success of the Tampa Prep soccer program.

Assistant Coach: Elliot Payne
Coaching Background: A native of Harrogate, England, Coach Elliot has an extensive knowledge of the game. Coach Elliot played at the collegiate level in England, representing Harrogate College for two seasons’ (2005-2007) in the English Colleges Football Association League (ECFA). He attended Leeds Metropolitan University’s: Carnegie Sport College for two years studying Sport Performance. At his time at Carnegie Sport College, he gained his F.A Level 1 & 2 Coaching Football Licenses (2007). Coach Elliot graduated from the University of Tampa with his Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science in 2012. Coach Elliot has worked as a professionally certified coach for eight years and has coached both boys and girls at various competitive youth soccer teams, from the North of England to California.

Assistant Coach: John Bamford
Coaching Background:
Coach Bamford brings an impressive soccer background to Tampa Prep, and he has an unparalleled knowledge and passion for the game. Growing up in California, Coach Bamford played for both the Olympic Development Program's West Region and the United States U-17 National Team. Bamford took his skills (both athletic and academic) to Harvard University, where he played for a standout Ivy League side. Coach Bamford has contributed immensely to the program’s success, and has played a significant role in the three state championships the program has won since 2010 (when he joined the program).
