Team Overview

Rowing is the consummate team sport that provides a tremendous amount of physical and mental growth to its athletes. Joining the rowing crew creates an experience for an individual that is unforgettable as he/she work towards developing a tremendous rhythm of determination, calloused power and a relentless desire to help lead their team to success. The rowing team also fosters an environment of trust and dedication that takes place on the Hillsborough River for practice, and on the race course for championships. Additionally, we have proudly produced many collegiate scholarship athletes to colleges such as Clemson University, University of Texas, Boston College, Boston University, Stanford University and Alabama.

Interim Head Coach: Shannon Hoffman
Alma Mater: University of Wisconsin-Madison
Rowing Background: Shannon was recruited for rowing by the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She received the 2011 First Team Academic Momentum Award as a senior. Competed three years at the Big Ten Championships and won 1st place in 2011, 2nd place in 2012 and 3rd place in 2010 in the Varsity 4. She helped her team win the Big Ten Rowing Championship title in 2010. Shannon attended the NCAA Rowing Championship in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and won 3rd place in the grand finals in Varsity 4. After graduating college, Shannon served as an assistant coach and sculling instructor for her high school alma mater Academy of the Holy Names where she lead the team to a successful victory at the State Championships which lead to the participate in the Scholastic National Championship. She then took on the Head Women’s Novice Coach title at Plant High school for two years and guided the novice women’ team to Scholastic National Championship two years in a row.

Rowing Background: A native of the Philadelphia area, Jim Preston rowed for Monsignor Bonner High School and Penn A.C. Rowing Association, before joining the University of Tampa Crew in 1976.  After graduating from U.T., where he rowed as a scholarship athlete for four years, Jim attended law school at Villanova University.  Jim remains active in rowing and competes in masters sculling events as a member of the Tampa Rowing Club.  Jim has served as an assistant coach to the Tampa Prep Crew since 2007.  Jim has also coached for the Stewards Foundation and Boulder (CO) Community Rowing

Rowing Background: Steve won Most Valuable Novice award and served as Vice President for Notre Dame Crew as a senior. Raced in several national events, including the Head of the Charles, the San Diego Crew Classic, the Dad Vail Regatta and Eastern Sprints in doubles, 4’s and 8’s. Steve finished his senior season stroking the Men’s Varsity 8. Steve served as an assistant and head coach for Hillsborough High School Rowing before joining Tampa Prep as an assistant in 2009. Currently, Steve rows a double at regional and national regattas.
