Tampa Prep Named Apple Distinguished School

Tampa Preparatory School is pleased to announce that it has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for the SECOND TIME for the 2016-18 school years. We were honored with this designation for 2014-2016 due to the thoughtful and strategically planned implementation of an iPad one-to-one program. This designation is reserved for schools that meet criteria for innovation, leadership and educational excellence, and demonstrate a clear vision of exemplary learning environments.

Systematic planning and testing to prepare for the rollout of Tampa Prep’s iPad one-to-one program set the school up for success. With a seamless implementation, Tampa Prep families and faculty members have thoroughly embraced the new device throughout all grades and disciplines.

Tampa Prep’s Head of School Kevin Plummer said, “I could not be more proud of our school. The entire Tampa Prep community – faculty, parents, students and the Board of Trustees – has worked hard to create an environment of innovation and creativity that in the end places the school on the cutting edge of the use of technology as a tool for learning. The 21st century skills are alive and well at Prep and Apple has recognized our efforts.”

With the implementation of iPads, teachers can provide instant feedback to their students using apps like Nearpod and Socrative. Science classes run lab simulations and conduct virtual dissections with ease. Many disciplines use green screens and iPads to create interesting and relevant videos. In Health and Physical Education classes, students and coaches analyze movements and sports analytics. Middle School students participate in the Hour of Code program using their iPads. Students in all grades have the opportunity to learn computer programming, edit photos and videos, compose music and create CAD drawings on the iPad for 3D printing.

“We are excited that Apple has recognized how our thoughtful integration of technology supports our mission of providing unlimited, relevant opportunities for innovative teaching and learning,” said Chad Lewis, Director of Technology at Tampa Prep.

Beginning in 2011, Tampa Preparatory selected a group of faculty members they called “iPilots” to thoroughly test the device and identify a group of apps that would be the standard for the entire school. A year after creating the “iPilot” team, all faculty members were provided with iPads and asked to incorporate the devices in the curriculum. Tampa Prep purchased two full classroom sets of iPads so every teacher could teach at least one week of classes with the iPads to expose students to this technology.

The selection of Tampa Preparatory School as an Apple Distinguished School highlights our success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment. As part of the application process, the Technology Department created an engaging iBook (https://itun.es/us/5bN14) detailing the accomplishments and implementation of becoming an iPad one-to-one school. Students and faculty members are now using iPads in ways that were impossible in previous years, offering students deeper engagement and more creative outlets. With a successful iPad one-to-one launch and a great year using the devices in classrooms, Tampa Prep is excited to see how teaching and learning continues to flourish in the next few years.

"The 21st century skills are alive and well at Prep and Apple has recognized our efforts."
