Honor Societies at Tampa Preparatory School

Tampa Preparatory School is proud to induct students into several national and international Honor Societies each year. See the complete list below.

Cum Laude Society

This is a prestigious, international honor society founded in 1906 to promote learning and scholarship in secondary schools. Juniors and seniors are selected by a faculty committee on the basis of each student’s grade point average. Not more than 10% of the junior class may be inducted into Cum Laude; not more than 20% of the senior class may be inducted as members. French Honor Society

The French Honor Society was founded by the American Association of Teachers of French in 1949 to recognize academic excellence.  Students who are enrolled in a Level 3, 4 or AP French class are eligible for membership at the discretion of their French teacher.  Contact: Ms. Sherri Queen

Mu Alpha Theta

Mu Alpha Theta is the national high school mathematics honor society. The Tampa Prep chapter requires its members to maintain an average grade of B+ or better across all of the upper school mathematics courses they have taken.  Members should show interest in mathematics beyond their normal coursework.  Full membership is open to students who have completed Algebra 2 and who continue to enroll in more advanced mathematics courses. Associate membership is open to students who have not yet completed Algebra 2 but who can reasonably be expected to become full members in the future.  Contact: Mrs. Jennifer Keller

National Art Honor Society

In 1978, the National Art Education Association (NAEA) created the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) program, designed specifically for high school students in grades 9-12, for the purpose of inspiring and recognizing those students who have shown an outstanding ability in Art. The NAHS strives to instill the highest standards in Visual Art, and to bring Art Education to the attention of the school and community. Students selected to join NAHS have shown effort and dedication in the field of Art. They have further demonstrated the highest qualities in Art Scholarship, Service and Character. National Honor Society

The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 to recognize and encourage academic achievement and the development of qualities deemed to be essential to citizens in a democracy: scholarship, leadership, character, and community service. The Tampa Preparatory School Chapter of NHS volunteers in a variety of capacities in both the community and around the school. National Junior Honor Society

NJHS recognizes students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship and service. To be eligible, students must be in 7th or 8th grade, have attended Tampa Prep for at least two semesters, and attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0.  Students may submit to the Faculty Council a form listing their activities and accomplishments during Middle School. The Faculty Council reviews these, as well as teacher recommendations, and invites qualifying students to join NJHS.  The induction ceremony takes place at a special assembly, at the end of the year. National Latin Honor Society

Students who complete Latin II, III or an AP level Latin class with an A- average or better are enrolled in the National Latin Honor Society sponsored by the American Classical League the following fall. Membership is annual and must be earned each year.  Contact: Miss Julia Roper

Quill and Scroll

Quill and Scroll is an international honor society organized to encourage and recognize individual student achievement in journalism and scholastic publication. To be eligible, juniors and seniors must be in the upper third of their class in general scholastic standing, must have done superior work in some phase of journalism or school publications work, must be recommended by that publication’s faculty advisor, and must be approved by Quill and Scroll’s executive director. Spanish Honor Society

The Spanish Honor Society was founded in 1953 by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese to recognize high achievement of high school students in Spanish and to promote the continuing interest in Hispanic studies. Induction is reserved for students who show a dedication to and love of Spanish language and culture at all levels, but is limited to those in the 3rd level of instruction or above. TRI-M National Music Honor Society

TRI-M is under the supervision of The National Association for Music Education. The purpose of this organization is to inspire music participation, create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, and promote leadership in music students of secondary schools. Sophomores, juniors and seniors are nominated by the two music teachers based on their participation in performance or academic music classes, and must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
