Rowers Competes in Halloween Regatta

By: Head Coach Kelsey Franks

After 10 hours of racing, the whole team huddles up to celebrate a successful race day.

The Tampa Prep Rowing Team competed in the Halloween Regatta at the Tampa Bypass Canal, against more than 20 other teams. Rowers competed in 13 categories and were seen all day jumping in and out of boats.

The day started with the Men's Varsity 4+ (Lucy K, Aidan M, Jake A, Connor S, Gareth K). They were unsure of their ranking so they kept it simple and that paid off, coming in second place and beating both Berkeley Prep and Hillsborough High School by over 30 seconds! Immediately afterwards, the boys split up into small boats to compete in the Varsity Doubles where Connor and Gareth took second, followed by Jake and Aidan in fifth place.

Tampa Prep had two entries in the JV 4+, with the "A" boat (Mark M, John Lucas B, Dean N, Alex K, John F) taking sixth out of 1 entries, and the "B" boat (Lucy K, Ben H, Adam S, Brooks J, Tim J) placing 11th in the category. Both teams proudly hit their technical goals and performed well in their new category.

Varsity 4+ and JV 4+ "A" boats competed together for the first time in awhile in the Men's Varsity 8+ event and they came in sixth place. JV 4+ "A" and "B" boats combined into the JV 8+ category, where they had a blast chasing other teams down the course, placing seventh overall!

The varsity women each raced in two events with the first being Novice 4+ (Kris S, Meagan L, Ari S, Amelia H, Andrea K), placing 10th out of 16 entries. In the double event Anya H. and Taylor B. took 10th place.

Immediately after, Anya H. and Taylor B. hopped into the Junior and Lightweight single event, where Taylor B. came in third with Anya H. right behind her for fourth place. Senior rower Rachel S. competed in her first Varsity 1x race. She had the whole team cheering her on and set an example of resiliency all the way down the course.

The team will compete next at Leader of the Lake in Clermont, FL on Saturday, November 11.
