Tampa Prep Faculty
Mr. Carl Carlson
Harvard University, Ed.M
I come from a family of educators and grew up as a faculty child on three different boarding school campuses in New England. One day during my 11th grade year I was sitting in math class and had a moment when I knew that I wanted to become a teacher. After attending Wesleyan University, (where I fell in love with Economics), I began my career as a teacher, coach and dorm parent at St. Mark's School in Southborough, Massachusetts. After four years I returned to school and earned my Masters Degree in Education from Harvard University. In the summer of 1995 I married my wife, Alison, then began an 18-year stay at the Taft School in Watertown, CT. I taught math and english, coached basketball and soccer, lived in dorms and served in a variety of administrative roles. In the summer of 2013 we moved to Tampa and began our connection with Tampa Prep. My oldest son, Cameron, graduated in the class of 2016. My middle son, Owen, is currently a junior; while my third son, Zach, is in eighth grade at Prep.
At all of the various schools I have attended and worked in, a constant for me is that I love the relationships that I have with individuals and groups. Every school year, class, team, play, etc. involves a group of people that take a common journey. Working with students and faculty toward a shared goal is awesome. Along each journey are inevitable moments of joy, frustration, excitement and a host of other emotions. It is satisfying and rewarding to look back over a school year and to see the amazing growth that adolescents display and to know that you played a role in this development. I am incredibly lucky that I get to work with the students and faculty at Tampa Prep every day and to share my journey with so many amazing people.
